Paper Assignment #1

Do the critiques of authorship proposed by Michel Foucault and Howard Becker complement or contradict each other? How so?

Make an argument for how these two theories do or do not fit together; demonstrate your understanding of their critiques by being as specific about them as possible. (Please do not fret that Becker prefers the term "artist" and Foucault the term "author"; they are discussing the same kinds of people.)

Your essay is due in class on Thursday, July 12th. It should be 2 - 3 pages long; do not roll onto that fourth page. This requires you to be economical in describing their arguments, and focused in making yours. And please attend not only to the content of your essay but the quality of your writing; a clever analysis can be sabotaged by bad spelling, awkward grammar, and clumsy writing.
